Phonics Lesson 18

Learning objective: 

To read/write grapheme/phoneme /b/ and segment and blend cvc words


Revisit/review: 

Go through all the sounds learnt so far with the flash cards - s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, ck, ck, e, u, r, h

Find the letter:

Ask children to find a specific letter using this grid. and circle it.

Teach: 

Teach /b/ using objects beginning with /b/ 
This is a bbbbat, this is a bbbball, this is a bbbbox

Use the Jolly phonics action.  Pretend to hit a ball with a bat and say b, b, b.
  
All the children to do the action and say the sound. Make sure each child is saying the sound correctly.


Skywrite the letter /b
/ You could also get children to sit in a circle and write the sound on each other's back so they can really feel it.

Play the one minute game with the children to really embed the letter formation for /b/



Practise:

Phoneme frames

Children to draw two lines down their whiteboard to make a 3 box phoneme frame. Read out the following words and the children must write the words in their phoneme frame. One sound in each box.


  1. bat
  2. bun
  3. back
  4. bed
  5. bin
  6. beck
  7. bit
  8. bop
  9. bap
  10. bag


Apply:

Play word thief with the following sentence.

Put a bin in a bed.

Write the sentence on a sentence strip. Read it together and then cut it into words. Ask the children if they can remember what the sentence was. Rearrange the sentence together. Ask the children to close their eyes. Take a word away and then ask them to open their eyes. Which word is missing? Repeat several times.

Ask each child to write the sentence on a whiteboard.

Send Home:

A list of words to practice with a parent. The aim being fast blending to automacy.
