Phonics Lesson 23

Learning objective: 

To read/write grapheme/phoneme /ss/ and segment and blend cvc words


Revisit/review: 

Go through all the sounds learnt so far with the flash cards - s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, ck, ck, e, u, r, h, f,ff, l, ll

Play the 'bang' game. Each child picks a card and reads the word. If correct they keep it. Go around the children continuing to pick cards until someone gets a 'bang' card. They must put all their cards back. The first person to get 5 cards is the winner.



Teach: 

Show children the flashcard of /ss/
Read the following words, listening to where the sound is in the word.

less

mess
fuss
boss
miss
kiss

All the children to do the action and say the sound. Make sure each child is saying the sound correctly.

Phonics Lesson 22

Revisit/review:

Play the 'The one minute game' using one or two of the sounds learnt so far. How many times can they write the sound in one minute? Set a timer and give them whiteboards and pens. Letters MUST be formed correctly otherwise you will rub them out.

Explain how you find this sound at the end of words, not at the beginning.

You may need to teach the game first if the children do not know how to play it.
Children to work in pairs and each has one of the sounds learnt so far to play with. Repeat with other sounds if there is time.

This is a ffffrog, this is a ffface, this is a fffox

Practise:

Children to play 'word stairs'

Write a word at the bottom of the stairs. The child must change one sound to make a new word and continue up the ladder. It doesn't matter if they make an alien word as long as they can read it to you.


Start with a /f/ word and give each child a different word to begin with so there is no copying.

  4. fog
  5. fun
  6. fib


Apply:

Play word thief with the following sentence.

A fat cat had fun on a mat.


Write the sentence on a sentence strip. Read it together and then cut it into words. Ask the children if they can remember what the sentence was. Rearrange the sentence together. Ask the children to close their eyes. Take a word away and then ask them to open their eyes. Which word is missing? Repeat several times.

Ask each child to write the sentence on a whiteboard.

This is a hhhhat, this is a hhhhand, this is a hhhhip

Children could work in pairs playing this game. Make sets of 3 cups for each pair of children. They can all swap over.

Phonics Lesson 15

Learning objective: 

To read/write grapheme/phoneme /u/ and segment and blend cvc words


Revisit/review: 

Go through all the sounds learnt so far with the flash cards - s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, ck, ck, e.

Play the 'one minute game', choose one of the sounds learnt so far and ask the children 'How many times can you write it in one minute?' The child must write the sound correctly as many times as they can on a whiteboard.

Set a timer. when the one minute is up the children can count how many times they have written it.
Repeat with other sounds. It is good to choose ones that the children are perhaps not so good at remembering.



Teach: 

Teach /u/ using objects beginning with /u/ and that contain the /u/ sound.
This is an uuuumberella.
This is a 'tuuuuub', this is a 'puuuud', this is 'fuuuun'

Practise:

Introduce phoneme frames to the children. A sound goes in each box. Give each child a whiteboard and pen and explain how you are going to write some words (if the child struggles with writing then give them some magnetic letters.) Show the child how to draw two lines down their whiteboard to divide it into 3. Please see this post on Phoneme frames. How would we write the following words?


  1. tub
  2. cub
  3. fun
  4. sun
  5. up
  6. bun
  7. put
  8. pun
  9. nut
  10. gut
Make sure you do the first one with the children to model listening to the sounds in the word. Verbally say 'tub' and then stretch it out 'tuuuuubt', then count with your fingers how many sounds you can hear t/u/b I can hear 3 sounds.
The first sound is /t/ - show the children where you start writing. I usually put a dot on the first box on the phoneme frame. Write the /t/ show correct letter formation. Then say the word again and listen carefully to what the next sound is. Write this in the middle box and finally repeat with the last box. When you have written the word. Show the children how to blend the sounds into the word again. They must check this when they do their writing.


Apply:

Reading captions

Download the following captions and ask the child to read and draw a picture of their caption. They must read it themselves by blending each word and thinking about the meaning of the caption.
